Life & Work with School of Rock Kirkwood Phillip Russo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Russo. Them and their team share their story with us below:

School of Rock started in the mid-90’s by Paul Green & was officially established under the name “School of Rock” in 2002. Since then, SoR has over 250 schools in nine different countries. Kirkwood opened in the Spring of 2014 & has been rocking ever since. Pre-covid, our school was just over 300 students & since things started to open back up, we are on the cusp of returning to that number.

School of Rock is a patented, performance-based music school with a proprietary “Songfirst” methodology in which we put students into bands accompanied by a private lesson to teach music concepts & live-performance skills.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge was quickly adapting a curriculum that is based on performing & practicing together in the room to be able to function in an online, zoom-oriented world during the height of the pandemic. To meet that challenge, we utilized our proprietary School of Rock method app in which students submitted audio recordings to popular rock favorites through the app via backing tracks as well as submitted video in which we made music videos with. We’ve been balancing a hybrid of in-person & online education since March of 2020, although we are currently in the process of transitioning back to being primarily in-person.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Rule #1; always be kind & understanding. When working with people & families, and really in all aspects of life; if we forget to be kind, understanding & empathetic to our customers, community & peers, then we are forgetting the bigger picture.
