Meet Alexis Black of Wright City Missouri

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Black.

Hi Alexis, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I live and breathe art. My whole life has always been consumed by it. Drawing, painting all of it. I was always the one going above and beyond in art class. When I was about 11, my father introduced me to the tattoo community, who was a tattoo artist. I used to walk to the studio he worked after school and helped draw for his appointments. I would help around the studio. I would study all of the artists while they worked. I was amazed at the idea of people forever walking around with permanent art on their bodies. I was inspired to follow the dream of becoming a tattoo artist. When I was 12, I did a colored tattoo of a caterpillar on my mom. And I have been tattooing ever since. When I was younger, it was only my parents I tattooed on. But as I got into high school, I kept drawing and practicing. When I was 18, I applied for an apprenticeship.

I went through many life curveballs during that apprenticeship, from getting discouraged and not feeling good enough at it to my (biggest inspiration) dad passing away, my little sister passing away, and many other life challenges. I finally completed the apprenticeship and got my license at age 22. I’m 24 now. In October of 2021, I left the studio I was at (along with two co-workers) to open our shop in the heart of Wright City, MO, alongside my best friend Stephanie and our newfound friend JD. We all went through many challenges opening the studio, one of the main ones being that this small town had no ordinance in place for a tattoo studio because there had never been one before. So with the help of the Alderman, council members, and a supportive community, we were allowed to open up shop! We were open and running by December 3! I’m now a 24-year-old business owner, and let me say how proud my 11-year-old self and my dad would be of me! I’m so thankful for my business partners and the constant support from my friends, family, and wonderful clientele.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Wright city didn’t have any laws or ordinances to allow a tattoo studio, so we had to attend city meetings and meet with the alderman and city council to get voted in by the city to be allowed to open our studio. As female artists in the industry, we were not taken seriously by our male peers. When we went to our first convention, there were only a handful of female artists. But now, female artists have exploded and are taking over the tattoo world daily!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Tattoo and Piercing Artist I love to do all kinds of tattoos. I don’t stick to just one style; that way, when someone walks through our door, I can help them! I’m most proud of the hard work and determination that drove me to where I am today. I’m proud of my co-business owners too! What sets me apart from others is when someone sits in my chair, they have my undivided attention. I put my everything into their tattoo. I make sure they’re comfortable and relaxed and that they’re always having a good time. Most people say tattoo is “ink therapy,” and it is. So many times when a client has sat in my chair, it’s for a sentimental Tattoo, so it becomes a good session of people talking about their feelings, and by the end of the tattoo, they feel so much better, and it makes me feel good knowing they’re happy.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I can’t say there is anything I dislike about this city. I love how small town and relaxed it is. I love how the city council truly cares about all of us citizens and how we feel about things going on. My life is here and will stay here. My future children will grow up here.
