Hi, Alissa Starr; we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a child, I always wanted to capture things from family, friends, or nature. I always found beauty in the little things and wanted proof of what I saw. Photography has always been a big part of my life, but my journey didn’t officially start until 2018 when I bought my first camera. It felt amazing having my passion in my hands for once instead of using a family member’s camera! The possibilities were endless; my best idea was to capture anyone willing. So, the collaborations started and have yet to end.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The thing about journeys is they’re never linear. I had months of depression where I didn’t even touch my camera, and then COVID happened. That’s when I started to care less and do more. I traveled to 6 states during the time of COVID-19. And I met the best people, all by no longer wanting to live in fear but more so in alignment with my passion. Connection is everything, and I was determined to find just that.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
My work is photography; I don’t turn down any shoots. But I specialize in portraits! I’m known for studio and location shoots, mainly my styled shoots! I’m most proud of the connections I’ve made within my work.,and not only that, but I am also pleased to have seen my girls’ confidence flourish. I’ve had girls start shooting with me, not knowing much about modeling, and now they’re off doing their work with the knowledge and skills they gained! Seeing my work make a difference in them makes me so happy. If I were to say what sets me apart from others is that I’m very attentive to the emotions of the person I’m shooting, I show photos as we go for a little “hype up” moment, most every time it leaves the model surprised! Like, “Wow, I look like that?!” Or “That’s good!” Surprising people with their magic is my favorite thing to do!

We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking.
I’m a firm believer that you get back what you put in. The universe has a beautiful way of ensuring you always get the return you deserve. It may not be in your “ideal timing” but more so in divine timing. Risks are necessary because if you don’t take a leap of faith, you’ll never see what’s on the other side of your fear!
