Meet Amy Butler of Amy Butler, MMFT-Individuals, Couples and Marriage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Butler.

Hi Amy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Since I was a child, education was always an important aspect of my life. After graduating high school, I completed 2 bachelor’s and 2 master’s degrees. My first 3 degrees were geared toward education. I wanted to help children learn, precisely read. As a child, I struggled with academics, especially reading. There were many nights of studying. Once I began teaching, I fell in love with my career and my students. But it wasn’t easy. Some of my students had troublesome lives. I would talk with parents and children to help them excel with me. We would discuss ways for them to communicate with their child and effectively parent. At that point, I realized I wanted to become a marriage and family therapist. I wanted to help children and their families communicate better. I liked the children to excel because their parents had “figured it out.” So began my journey to becoming a marriage and family therapist while working full-time and raising 2 young children with my husband.

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
Before I graduated, I established my presence on various forums, such as Google, Facebook, and Psychology Today. Prior to working as a marriage and family therapist, my husband and I owned an automotive and performance shop. While we owned our shop, I learned how to network on public forums and make a presence on Google search engines. I established a niche based on the types of phrases I would use, pictures I would add, and hashtags, such as #butlermft which were all embedded in my bios and websites. I wouldn’t necessarily say that I struggled, but there were times as I began this journey, and still do occasionally, when I question if I’m the right person to help others. I have learned that this career path requires acceptance of self-compassion and forgiveness daily and many of my clients are struggling with accepting themselves as society tends to make impossible demands. It was at that point, I realized that I didn’t find the career but that it had found me. It has saved me from my internal struggles and allowed me to help others stuck in similar cycles.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Amy Butler, MMFT-Individuals, Couples, and Marriage?
I work as a marriage and family therapist several evenings a week. Most of my clients are couples, but I see individuals as well. I specialize in communication and relational issues. I also have experience working with ADHD, anxiety, and self-esteem. What sets me apart from others is that I am forward but compassionate. I address issues I see as a problem quickly and effectively. As some of my clients would say, I’m human and not robotic. But, with being human, there is also the chance for error, and I’m the first to hold myself accountable and take ownership. Working with people means that everyone has different concerns, and different things work for some and not others. That said, my job sometimes takes a few tries to figure out how to offer tools to help. I am proud of my high referral rate and continued success with couples. Couples have thanked me profusely for giving them back their marriage. Something that didn’t seem possible, and that makes me feel good!

What makes you happy?
I’m happy every day I walk into my office because that is another chance I have to help others be happy, not just content. Most couples come to me as a last-ditch effort to save their marriage that has been struggling for years. Or individuals just trying to survive day-to-day stressors. If they trust me and I’m allowed to help them, that’s a pretty amazing feeling.
