Meet Andrew Gaffigan of South City St. Louis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Gaffigan

Hi Andrew, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started doing stand up at nineteen years old. I had dreamed of doing it for years. I started writing jokes when thirteen. I started when I was in my first semester of community college, and hated school so I said ‘I’m doing it’ I found out the Westport Funny Bone (my favorite place in the world) had their open mic night that day, so I wrote a set and went.
Since then time has really flown. I’ve been very fortunate to be accepted into many comedy festivals, do shows on the road, and feature at all the clubs in the city. In December of 2022 my friend/ fellow comedian Ronaldo Mercado and I started Gateway City Roast League, a roast battle show, which had to be the most fun I’ve had in comedy.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would like to say it has been a smooth road. The biggest struggles I think are thinking I deserved opprotunities before I was ready. Which is good, you keep working hard, and once I did get those opprotunities I was glad I got them when I did because it gave me that much more time to get better. Besides that periodic writers block always are annoying, but anything creative is ebbs and flows. It’ll always come back around.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I would say I get most of my material from everyday life and my family. As of now I’m most proud of my new closer. I worte it about four months ago and I think it really shows an improvment in my writing skills.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I think theh industry will stay close to the same as now. People are building their audeince through social media and podcast. That isn’t going to change. I do think younger comedians aren’t going to put themselves out there as quickly though. I think they’ll start to understand comedy takes a long time to get good at and will give themselves time to grow and develop and act before they start putting themselves out there.
