Meet Angela Zeng of KARVIVA BEVERAGES

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Zeng.

Hi Angela, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in China in a family rooted in generations of herbal healing, where wellness wasn’t something you fixed after it broke, it was something you nurtured daily. That early exposure shaped how I understood health, even before I had the language for it.

Years later, I immigrated to the U.S. to pursue medical research and earned a PhD in Pathology. I trained in rigorous Western science, working with data, protocols, and evidence-based medicine. For a long time, those two worlds, ancient Eastern wisdom and modern science, lived separately in my life.

Everything changed during a deeply personal family health crisis that forced me to confront a gap I could no longer ignore. I realized that while science excels at diagnosing disease, it often overlooks prevention, nourishment, and the emotional dimensions of healing. I began asking a simple but radical question: What if food could be everyday medicine again, grounded in science, but guided by nature?

That question led to the founding of Karviva Wellness Beverages. I started Karviva to translate Traditional Chinese Medicine principles into modern, low-sugar, whole-plant drinks that fit real life. Building the company as an immigrant woman founder wasn’t easy. I faced skepticism, supply-chain challenges, funding barriers, and the pressure to “fit” into a conventional wellness narrative. But I stayed committed to creating products that were gentle, honest, and accessible, without shortcuts or hype.

Over time, Karviva grew from a personal mission into a nationally recognized brand. Our drinks have been featured by outlets like USA Today and Bon Appétit, and we recently received top honors at the World Beverage Innovation Awards. Through programs like Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses, I sharpened my leadership and scaled the company with intention, even in a challenging economic climate.

Today, I see my work not just as building a beverage brand, but as helping people reconnect with their bodies, their food, and nature itself. Whether through entrepreneurship, public speaking, or education, my goal remains the same: to make healing practical, inclusive, and human: one small, nourishing choice at a time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Building Karviva meant navigating challenges on multiple levels at once: personal, cultural, financial, and operational.

As an immigrant woman founder, one of the earliest obstacles was credibility. I was introducing wellness concepts rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine to a market that often favors trends over tradition and speed over patience. I had to learn how to translate centuries-old wisdom into language that was accessible, compliant, and scientifically grounded, without diluting its integrity.

Financially, access to capital was another major hurdle. Like many small businesses without real estate or traditional collateral, securing affordable financing was difficult, especially during periods of economic uncertainty. I bootstrapped carefully, made hard trade-offs, and leaned heavily on education and peer networks, including the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, to build a more resilient financial strategy.

Operationally, scaling a clean-label beverage brand came with its own learning curve: supply-chain disruptions, rising ingredient costs, production constraints, and the constant pressure to grow without compromising quality. Each challenge forced me to become more disciplined, data-driven, and intentional in decision-making.

Perhaps the most personal challenge was learning to lead while carrying the emotional weight of family health struggles. There were moments when I questioned whether I could sustain both the business and the responsibility of caring for those I love. That experience reshaped my definition of success, from speed and recognition to impact, integrity, and sustainability.

Looking back, those obstacles didn’t slow the journey; they shaped it. They taught me how to lead with clarity, say no when necessary, and build a company that reflects not just what we sell, but what we stand for.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Karviva Beverages is a wellness beverage company rooted in the belief that food can be both healing and enjoyable. We create low-sugar, whole-plant drinks that blend Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles with modern nutrition science, designed to support everyday wellness without extremes, detox fads, or artificial shortcuts.

What sets Karviva apart is our approach. Instead of chasing trends, we focus on balance, gentleness, and long-term health. Our formulations are inspired by centuries-old herbal wisdom and validated through modern research, prioritizing ingredients like sprouts, botanicals, and functional plants that nourish the body naturally. As a PhD-trained medical researcher, I lead product development with a deep respect for both data and tradition.

We’re known for making functional wellness approachable. Our drinks are crafted to fit into real life, busy mornings, social gatherings, recovery after stress, without high sugar, artificial stimulants, or harsh cleansing effects. This philosophy has resonated with consumers and the industry alike. Karviva has been featured in major media outlets including USA Today and Bon Appétit, and our products have earned top honors at the World Beverage Innovation Awards.

What I’m most proud of is that Karviva doesn’t just sell beverages; we educate and empower. We invite people to rethink wellness as something sustainable, culturally inclusive, and deeply human. For our readers and customers, I want them to know that Karviva is built with care, for the body, the planet, and the diverse traditions that inform how we heal.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something that often surprises people is that I’m actually very introverted. I spend much of my time in deep thought, research, and quiet observation, and I need solitude to recharge. While people see me speaking on stages, leading a company, or being visible in the media, my strength comes from stillness, reflection, and listening.

Another surprise is that many of Karviva’s earliest formulations were created during deeply personal moments: late at night, in my kitchen, while caring for my family during periods of emotional and physical stress. Wellness, for me, wasn’t born in a boardroom; it was shaped by lived experience. That’s why I’m deeply committed to gentleness, balance, and sustainability over extremes.

Finally, people are often surprised to learn how much creativity plays a role in my work. Formulation feels a lot like composing music or painting with plants: balancing flavors, energies, and functions until something feels both nourishing and joyful. That creative intuition, combined with science, is at the heart of everything I build.
