Today we’d like to introduce you to Ariel Storm.
Hi Ariel , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started writing stories and poems as a pre-teen. It was kid stuff, but there was something about writing that pulled me in from an early age. I didn’t start writing novels until my early 20s and have had lots of starts and stops in my career since then. I’m currently coming out of one of those “stop” periods and I haven’t published a book or written consistently in four years.
While I’ve always admired writers and artists that can create no matter what life throws at them, I’ve found that I just don’t have as much creative mojo during big life changes. The past several years have been full of changes and my writing has taken a back seat.
I’m happy to share that I am feeling those flutters of excitement and making time for writing again, and my characters are starting to talk to me, and asking me to tell their stories.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! The starts and stops have been frustrating to say the least.
One of the other challenges I’ve faced in the past few years is losing my writing community. For years I was involved in at least one group. In my early days as a writer those looked like writing critique circles, as well as writing professional development groups like Romance Writers of America, and even writers support groups. Since the pandemic a lot of groups and writers conferences have fizzled out and the area I live in doesn’t have an RWA chapter or any other writers groups nearby and I really miss the camaraderie! Writing can be such an isolating career and having a connection to other writers is invaluable.
Since I’ve started visiting local cafes in my area and am once again plugging away at my stories, I’m tossing around the idea of forming a writers group in my area. Call me superstitious, but hopefully it’s not too much to ask for anyone reading this to wish me luck in that endeavor! 🙂
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I write contemporary romance and my brand tagline is: Fiercely independent heroines. Unconventionally sexy heroes. I love writing characters that are slightly different from what you may find in romance novels. My most recent release is actually a series about a bar that showcases nerd hobbies and the romances that happen between the customers and bar staff.
The main female characters in these stories are smart, independent, and are forging their own path in life. The main male characters aren’t typical alpha males, but are loyal to the women they love and support them through every challenge.
Since I launched the series I’ve embraced my quirky side and have built my brand around it. The series cover art has a pop culture/comic book aesthetic and I rock a colorful pinup look whenever I take author photos or make appearances.
Any big plans?
Getting back into my writing groove is my current plan, followed by releasing the remaining three books in the Talk Nerdy to Me series. And because some of the main and secondary characters in the series have been so powerful to me, I also have an idea for at least one spin off series that would focus on members of a female rock band that take inspiration for their lyrics, and part of their vibe, from Jane Austen novels. I’m not sure anyone will want to read that (except me) but I hope to start that in about a year or so.
