Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Schneider.
Hi Brooke, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
December 2015, my world was forever changed when Leia, a truly extraordinary dog entered my life. Determined to give her the life she deserved, I embarked on a journey to find a career I loved that would also allow me the financial freedom needed to provide for Leia. By a stroke of luck on December 8, 2016 I stumbled upon a job as a dog bather. Despite having no prior experience I instantly fell head over heels with the job. Every wagging tail, and slobbery kiss, captured my heart.
In May 2018, I made a life-changing decision to enroll at the Academy of Pet Careers. Balancing my studies and work, I dove head first into the world of pet styling. October 19, 2018 I proudly graduated from APC. Equipped with invaluable knowledge given by mentors who shared the same passion, I ready to make a difference.
Seeking hands-on experience, I ventured beyond my familiar boundaries and found a nurturing environment at a small grooming salon in Mascoutah, IL. It was here where where I dedicated my time. Perfecting my grooming techniques, and truly understanding the unique needs of each furry client became my daily life. While I loved my time at this small salon, I knew my dreams were bigger than what this place had to offer.
June 10, 2023 will forever be an unforgettable day. Fulfilling a life long dream, I opened the doors to my very own pet styling haven. Thanks to the help of my godmother, (second mom, Janel Wennemann) A small grooming salon nestled in the heart of Freeburg, IL where I give my all to provide exceptional care and style to every furry companion that walks through the door. As this journey of mine continues to unfold one wagging tail at a time, I am honored to be a part of this incredible community. Creating lasting connections with pets and their devoted families is something I have always been passionate about. Together we are making memories that will warm our hearts for years to come.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not, I think owning a small business there is an unlimited amount of anxiety. When I first opened my doors in Freeburg, I was in a self induced bicycle accident that caused me an injury that delayed me from grooming my first full week. My clients were very understanding, that I needed to take care of myself at the time. It just felt at the time, I was failing, but every failure is a step to success.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I own Sommer Dog Salon, and we specialize in all-inclusive dog grooming. This way every dog gets the best of the best that can be tailored to them. We use high end products, that are better for their coat. Every dog here, gets treated as a VIP with an upgraded shampoo, conditioner, blueberry facial, teeth brushing, ear cleaning, nail grinding, haircut or brush, glamour shots, and treats to go home with.
I am known for, being compassionate, positive, and creating an outreach to the community, and other small businesses.
I am most proud of helping animal control in cases where dogs need to be groomed, or bathed to feel better. I am proud of the feedback from our social media, which helps my business and recognizes the work I do here. Our social media recently, has been showcasing small businesses for “Where in the World is Posie”. Posie is a Pomeranian that sits on our desk, and greets every single customer that walks in. This mentions small businesses to help gain more traction, and while also making a shout-out for people to go and visit.
As my career has evolved, I am most proud of collaborating with small businesses such as, Top Notch Mobile Grooming, and Bark of the Town. I am proud of how we can share ideas, discuss business, and improvements that help our grooming industry.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My success has very much been driven by my dad. He was a very hardworking man, that always provided, and showed me what hard work can do. I get my empathy and positivity from my godmother Janel. Her outreach to our community helps spread our work. Janel is the reason why Sommer Dog Salon really exists. With her help and guidance, none of this would be possible. She is truly the best person I know, and so happy to have her on this journey with me. These two helped shape me as the person I am today. Last, but not least my husband Andrew. He always listens to any concerns that I have. He helps come up with solutions, and maintains a level head.
