Meet Erin Mohr of The Up and Up Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Mohr.

Hi Erin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I never thought that I was creative enough to do hair, but after realizing that I did just about every one of my friend’s hair for spechial events, I decided to give it a try. 13 years later, here I am! I have worked at some of the top salons in the area and worked for about seven years as an educator for L’Oreal Professionnel. I spechialize in creative color and Curly hair and am certified in Balayage and curl by curl cutting. Being an educator exposed me to new experiences in this industry that I credit my success to. It also helped me decide to open a salon of my own. I fell in love with the idea of helping others reach their full potential and it caused a serious shift im my mindset and career outlook. I love helping others and cheering them on, whether you are one of my stylists or my guest.

I have had a lot of success in my career, but becoming a business owner is by far my proudest accomplishment. I opened my salon on June 1st, 2020, with the intention of empowering confidence through education, changing the perception of the salon industry and raising professional standards. We are far from done but excited to see what’s next

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The salon industry is a tough one. It’s competitive and harsh if you are not in the right place. I found myself in environments where I was made to feel small, overlooked and undervalued. I was told repeatedly not to be myself because who I was, was not right. Little did I know that as soon as I let myself be me, everything changed for the better.

I started the journey of opening my salon in January of 2020. I found a great place and started to enter into lease nogotiotions on my dream salon. About two weeks later, the world shut down. I ended up finding a new space and the rocket launched into salon ownership in the span of just four weeks from the time i signed to leese to opening day. Besides the stress of opening a salon in that short of time, we also had the wild wild west situation of Covid. I was terrified we would shut down again and I wasnt sure I was going to be able to survive that.

My mom was diganosed with cancer in the summer of 2020, along with navigating covid, a new salon and all of the civil unrest, to say that it was extremely stressful is an understatement. I had a mental breakdown in December. I literally cryed myself to sleep every night. Just as I was starting to pull out of it, I found a lump on my breast the day after Christmas. That might have been the worst days of my life. After many tests it was found to be benign. I was told it was most likely caused by stress. I decided to make some changes after that.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Up and Up Salon?
We are a salon company dedicated to empowering confidence through education. In our company, education takes the highest priority. With our team, education comes in the form of constant continuing education, an intense associate program for all new stylists, mentorship and networking with other salons to gain more insight. Eduation for our guests comes in the form of our stylist talking them (the guest) through every step of the service so they can be put at ease during the service and us showing them how to properly style and maintain their new look. Our guests are empowered in our chair to make all hair decisions because we educate them on every step, then ask permission to continue. We are most proud of our salon culture. We have a strong culture that is warm, enviting and fun!

We are a team that does not believe in compitition, but we work on improving everyday. We give exceptional, high-end customer service and quality that you would expect to find in NYC or LA while also being aprochable. We spechialize in textured hair (curly hair) along with hair color. All of our stylists are highly trained in all the latest hair color techniques and methods, all textures of hair and have a solid foundation in color and design cutting. We are also proud of our contibtions to the community through dressed for success. We donate a percentage of all retail purchases to the organization

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I’m obsessed with St Louis city. I grew up about 40 mins south of the city in Arnold. I always worked in the county but moved up here about ten years ago. Having one foot in the county, I never felt like I truely belonged and always dreamed about one day moving out of the stl area. I started to realize that I absolutely loved the city. I loved the neighborhoods and how they were all so different. I love the people in the city, all the amazing food, parks and the overall energy of being in city limits. I decided to uproot everything, leave my clientel behind and move to a salon suite in the Grove about 3 in a 1/2 years ago. Best decision ever. Working for L’Oreal Professionnel, I was sent around the country to teach. I was able to check out so many different cities and none of them had everything we have here. Our city is seeing so much growth and I am so proud that I can be here to be a part of it. I have a couple of future business plans, I plan for each and every business that I open will be in st Louis city. I only thing I have against this city is that it doesn’t overlook mountains. I’m obsessed with mountains and planned to retire at 8000 feet. In all seriousness, I think our city has a long way to go in eqality, and opportunity for all people. I am excited to see where we go from here. I hope to help contribute to helping the city grow stronger.
