Meet Jamie Mushlin of Red Fitness Lounge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Mushlin.

Hi Jamie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got started in personal training when I decided to not go to Law School. I wanted to be a lawyer but I did not want to sit in class and listen to boring lectures and people. I wanted to get out and change the world and make a difference through health and fitness. I got my start at Bally’s`Total Fitness in 1988 right out of graduating High School.

I did orientations for members, worked my way up to personal trainer, then worked my way up to running the Clayton location and with persistence went on to run personal training for St. Louis and Kansas City.

Personal training was my way to be my -own boss, make my own rules, meet extraordinary people, and change their lives at the same time. I left Ballys in 1996 and went on my own. In 2000 I opened up Unique Physique and in 2005 I opened up Sweat St.Louis.

After having partners and being in business with them, I decided my ideas and leadership would better be served on my own to create my own destiny. In August of 2011 I said goodbye to business partners, and opened up Red Fitness Lounge in Clayton Mo. A high end fitness boutique specializing in catering to clients young and old and teaching them to get to the next level of their fitness journey.

In 2014 Adversity would rear its ugly head my way and present me with a football size brain tumor. Discovered from a hearing checkup my wife insisted I go to get checked out. November 5th 2014 is a day I will never forget.

A 15 hour surgery to save my life from not only the tumor but my brain bleeding and hemorrhaging at the same time. The doctors were successful at getting the whole tumor within the margins but unsuccessful at keeping my hearing nerve and balance nerve all to save my facials nerves so I could continue to look normal.

I have permanent damage from the effects but I am still here. The doctors said if it wasn’t for the shape I was in, I would have died. Needless to say fitness saved my life. Nine months later I woke up to a massive staff infection in the surgery site of my brain tumor, and was rushed back to the hospital to be opened up once again as well as to save my life once again.

To say I am here for a reason is an understatement and my friends and family have nicknamed me “Man of Steel”, do to my shape and size as well as surviving something that very much should have ended me.

To this day my new journey has been to teach people how to connect their mind and body together to live a full and healthy life.

I teach people to grow through what they go through.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been easy. Teaching people to understand how important their health should be and wanting it more than they do, always turns out to be an exhausting struggle. However, when they do get it and dial it in, the results of the client and their hard work speak for itself.

I also suffered a brain tumor in 2014, a small football size tumor on my brainstem connected to my ear canal on the left side. It is called an acoustic neuroma.

We’ve been impressed with Red Fitness Lounge, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Red Fitness Lounge is a small high end boutique facility in Downtown Clayton Missouri.

We specialize in one on one, and small group training from kids to Proffessional athletes, to everyday professionals to celebrities and actors.

I have been in the industry in St.Louis for 37 years and trained almost 4,500 people since that time in my career.

I walk the walk and talk the talk. I make it fun and engaging for my clients as do my trainers that also work with me. We keep it private, Proffessional and we make it about them, not about us the trainer. I have a photographic memory and I never give the same workout twice which the clients absolutely love.

The brand Red Fitness Lounge was a marketing genius campaign to attract people to want to come in and check out the space that looks more like a night club than a regular gym. High ceilings, state of the art equipment, and artwork everywhere to entice customers to enjoy the non intimidating atmosphere.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see more and more gyms popping up as the new “Bar or restaurant”. I see more people in their 40’s,50’s,60,70’s and even in their 80’s working out.

More focus on helping people age better and be more fit, year after year with small fitness wins each day.
