Meet Jennifer Brokaw of Studio Synergy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Brokaw.

Hi Jennifer, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been a proponent of physical fitness, and this was enhanced by my time in the U.S. Navy. Upon leaving the Navy, I began taking Pilates lessons at night (as I was an engineer by day). My passion for Pilates grew, and I decided to pursue it as a career in 2005.

My husband and I were in the process of moving from Virginia Beach, VA to St. Louis, MO at the time, so I took a six months detour to New York City where I trained in the authentic method of Pilates under master instructor Romana Kryzanowska. I completed my 600-hour apprenticeship in the exact studio where Joseph Pilates used to teach!

I began my Pilates career instructing at a studio in the Rock Hill area called Pure Pilates Plus. Here I worked with many wonderful clients and fine-tuned my skills. After about seven years at this studio (and three children later), I decided it was time to move my work closer to home.

In 2014, I opened my own Pilates studio in Arnold right across the street from my kids’ school and just a short drive from my house. Since then, it has been amazing working with clients from my old studio who travel down Hwy 55 to get to me, new clients from the Arnold/Imperial/South County area as well as friends and family nearby! I am happy to say that we offer a variety of services from Pilates to Massage to Strength and Conditioning and Personal Training. I love watching people feel better through working out!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been easy. One of the hard parts was knowing when it was time to leave my position as an instructor to expand and grow as a professional. Opening my own studio took months of late nights – working on obtaining a business loan, finding a suitable location, marketing, accounting and all of the other things that go into starting a business from scratch. My children were very young at the time. Without the unfailing support of my husband, I would not have been able to do it!

Another struggle took place last year in March of 2020 when COVID hit. I had finally built my business up to where I wanted it to be and then had to shut down for a month only to reopen with limited capacity. I wasn’t sure my small studio could survive, but thankfully I was able to receive grants and aid from many generous sources right here in the St. Louis area! Also, my amazing clients stuck with me and came back to workouts as quickly as protocols would allow. Thankfully we are now back to full operations!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Studio Synergy is a fitness studio that offers the following services: Pilates, Massage, Strength and Conditioning Classes (adults), Speed and Agility Classes (kids), Personal Training, Nutrition and Yamuna Body Rolling. We are a small, boutique-style studio that caters to each clients’ individual needs. Even our classes only have 4-8 students per class. We give personal attention to each client in each class!

I am most proud of the professionalism of each of the trainers at Studio Synergy and the elevated quality of instruction that they provide. Each instructor is highly educated in their specialty – mix that with some of the most personable people you will meet, and it creates a completely positive vibe that is contagious!

Know that when you come to Studio Synergy, you will be trained by well-trained instructors who truly care about you and are there to help you achieve your goals!

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
While I have attended networking groups and events in the past, the most successful avenue for getting my business out there has been word of mouth through current clients. I have worked hard to make my classes and private lessons some of the best around. My best advice would be to do what you do well, and people will spread the word!
