Today we’d like to introduce you to Karyn Shanks.
Hi Karyn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been working in music and entertainment in the St. Louis area for about 15 years. I started with a music blog from my SLU dorm room that featured all the underground artist in the city. I was the first site to cover acts like Da Banggaz, MC Keem, Luey V, Shorty Da Prince/Reggie Son, etc. Shortly after that, I began working as an intern for AMP doing street teamwork. I spent many years traveling with artists and learning the business. Eventually, after years of putting it off I got serious about learning to DJ.
In 2012, I began doing mixtapes. I’ve DJ’d in cities all over the country. I’ve done sets for Blocboy JB, Yella Beezy, Lil Ronny MF, and more. In recent years, I’ve been mastering the balance of artist manager/consultant and DJ. In 2019, I released my first compilation album, Chicken & Fries. I spend much of my time overseeing recording, mixing, releasing of projects. I also contribute to DeLux Mag as a digital feature writer.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I haven’t had any tremendous adversity but the biggest thing I’ve had to overcome is people’s reluctance to listen to or follow a woman. In this world, people are programmed to invalidate the thoughts and ideas of women. Many opportunities that might be a fit for someone like me often go to less experienced or even unqualified people because they were men who talked a good game.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in artist and brand management. I’m good at understanding what something is missing and filling that need.
I pride myself on loyalty and integrity. I’m a woman of my word. Anything I commit to I do with intention and wholeheartedly.
People often tell me that I’m intimidating, but I think that’s because I’m someone that stands string in my beliefs and who I am doesn’t change by who I’m speaking to at the time. I treat everyone the same. People always remember that about me.
Any big plans?
I’m more focused than ever on getting myself and my people over the hump and to new levels. We have several projects in the final stages getting ready for release. I hope to motivate those around me to elevate and the city to do the same. Nothing means more to me than helping the city succeed.
