Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie And Brad Green.
Hi Katie and Brad, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Little Souls is Brad and Katie Green. We are a husband and wife duo that writes and records music in the basement of our home in Alton, Illinois. We both have always been creatives. Brad sings, plays guitar and bass in quite the collection of bands and musical projects (Neighboring Villages, Overnighter, GradBreen). I (Katie) am an artist and a backyard birdwatching influencer. Yes, that’s a really a thing (@katiekreen) Musically, I have always just loved humming along to whatever Brad was strumming on the guitar.
During the pandemic, when the world was shut down, we decided one evening alone together that we should write and record something and just put it out there. We released our Self Titled EP, Halloween of 2021 and our second EP, “I Only Know You in Black and White” , in 2022. We haven’t stopped creating since then. We have more written and recorded, but right now we’re using our creative free time together to enjoy our family.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
At the start of this project not only were we navigating as humans during a pandemic, Brad and I were also in the process of IVF with our first daughter.
We ended up going through the process 3 more times, after our first, to try for a second child . We had two more successful implantations. At month 7 of my second pregnancy we suffered a tremendous loss. Our son tragically passed without reason.
The loss was absolutely soul crushing. The world stopped for us for a while. After allowing our hearts and body’s some time to heal we made the decision to use our last frozen embryo. Which gave us our youngest daughter.
We used this project as a means to be fun and creative but also as an outlet to work out some of our worries, fears and pain during such a scary, uncertain time. For me, recording the song, “Mother Nature”, from our second EP, “I Only Know You in Black and White”, was especially challenging. We both worked together on mixing and editing our songs so having to hear our biggest fears ringing in your ears on a loop was emotionally draining at times.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Brad has been passionately playing and creating music for the last 25 years. He sings, plays guitar, bass, and records. Some of his current projects outside of Little Souls are Neighboring Villages, GradBreen, and With Honey
Katie is an artist that works in various mediums but most recently has been working in digital illustration and videography. Katie hosts a daily birdwatching live on TikTok that has grown in popularity collecting over 700k followers on all combined socials. Her @ was even recently mentioned in a Vogue UK article about birdwatching. “Is Birdwatching Cool Now? Maybe. Is it Healing? Definitely”, by Olivia Jordan Cornellius
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Katie- Birdwatching has been a big part of my life the last 6 years so when I can sit down and read or get a quick listen of something I tune into the podcast “Get Birding with Sean Bean”. I’ve also been collecting different types of birding field guilds/books. My most recent favorite is “Extremely Accurate Birds,,” by Tommy Siegel.
Brad-Currently trying to be a good husband and father has been my main focus. When I do have time outside of my family and musical projects, I’m either listening to audio books or music. At the moment I’m listening to the audio book, “1984”, by George Orwell. Musically, I’ve been obsessed with the new Criteria, “SEIZE!” and Angine de Poitrine, “Vol. II.” Albums.
