Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Davis.
Hi Melody, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The first time I stepped foot in a gym was the summer I was 16. It was a small gym in an apartment complex I stayed at with my mom. I awkwardly tried to figure out the machines I knew nothing about for about 10 minutes until I decided the treadmill is where I’ll reside lol. I really wanted to lose weight and not be the chubby girl anymore, so I kept this routine up. I figured I needed to eat healthier too, so I tried cooking. The first healthy meal I made was baked chicken, mixed vegetables and some rice with not enough seasoning. I didn’t burn it, so I was proud of myself lol. I was busy developing skills I never thought would be useful beyond personal interest. When I wasn’t at the gym, I was on my laptop surfing the web and found Myspace. I saw all these people with pages that were so pretty and didn’t look like the basic page layouts. I wanted to figure out how to get my page to look just as pretty. That’s when I stepped into the world of graphic design and coding! I would spend hours working on code and being so stressed out you would think I was getting paid to do this, lol. It was stressful but I loved the end result, it got easier as I went on. I never would have imagined those things I was doing back then would be of any value today. It’s really crazy where things you think are small can take you.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. I’ve faced many challenges over the years. I used to allow the weight of it all eat me up inside. Eventually, I learned that I can only focus on what I’m in control of. I used to feel like I had no control over my life, and things just kept happening. I couldn’t understand why. Now, I don’t focus so much on the why and more on what actions I’m going to take to make the situation better. I’m still trying to figure things out, but I notice myself evolving from the circumstances I’ve had to deal with, and I’m so proud of myself for believing in myself and pushing for better.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I make motivational fitness content. I like my content to have a realistic tone that showcases the real human experience while incorporating creative video edits. Also, I like to talk about self-care and what that looks like. I want to get back to things being more authentic. I think people miss that side of social media. A fitness journey is one of the most real experiences I’ve had. It’s a mental game. You can go from telling yourself you’re completely defeated to feeling empowered. That big of a mental reset can happen in the course of 6 months to a year, depending on the person and their consistency. You can see my whole journey from when I made my first fitness post to restarting my journey after my second child. I want people to come to my page and get inspired to do whatever they want to do, fitness-related or not.
What I’m most proud of are the people who reach out to me to tell me that they worked on themselves today. Seeing the people I’ve been connected with having their glow-ups and coming out of their shells. It makes me so happy just to see more people happy. What sets me apart is that I’m just being me; this is who I am unapologetically. Everyone has something unique to them. Everyone should just be themselves; you’ll be much happier.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Being focused and honest with myself. One day, I got serious about myself and asked, “What am I passionate about?” How do I label something as “this is my thing.” Especially when you’re a person who loves trying new things often. I thought back to my childhood and the things I spent time doing on my own. These are the same things that keep coming and going out of my life: a fitness lifestyle, graphic design, web development, and the beauty industry. Once I started taking the things I love seriously, things came together.
