Today, we’d like to introduce you to Merlin Bell.
Hi Merlin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Merlin Lorenzo Bell, born on May 28, 1992, in St. Louis, MO, is the middle child of nine siblings. His mother is a dedicated saleswoman for hair products, and his father takes on various odd jobs.
From the tender age of six, Merlin was captivated by the magic of acting, inspired by legendary character actors such as Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, and Johnny Depp. His passion for performance, evident even in his early years, often led him to entertain his classmates and family, sometimes landing him in trouble at school but always bringing joy to those around him. This early dedication to his craft is a testament to his commitment and inspires all who hear his story.
In 2007, Merlin began his high school journey at Williams’s Ninth Grade Academy. After one semester, he transferred to Central Visual and Performing Arts High School, where he honed his acting skills. His time there was marked by significant achievements, including taking on supporting roles in productions like “Aladdin” and “The Wiz” and gaining technical experience in “Dream Girls.”
Merlin’s junior year began his professional acting career with a role in a National Boys Town Commercial PSA. He further expanded his experience by performing at the Missouri History Museum and collaborating with other young actors on historical dramas for museum visitors and school groups. These early experiences set the stage for his future success and are a testament to his talent and dedication.
In the fall of 2011, Merlin enrolled at Denison University in Granville, OH, majoring in Theatre.
Throughout his college years, he was an active participant in the theatre department, performing in numerous productions such as “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Theatres of War,” “The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God,” “The Malvolio Project,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” and “Rent.” Merlin also showcased his talent in student films, including “Charades,” “This Vacuum is Too Loud,” “Sweet Dreams,” “The Last Hurrah,” “Postmortem Jam,” “Hitchhiker and the Driver,” and “Midnight Man.”
Today, Merlin Bell is the visionary founder and CEO of the Poplar Institute for Film. With a BA in Theatre from Denison University and an MA in Theatre from Fontbonne University, Merlin is a creative professional with extensive experience in content management and production.
He has significantly contributed to several nonprofit arts and culture organizations as an actor, creative activist, and educator. Merlin’s unwavering passion for culture and the arts continues to drive his mission to amplify other creators’ stories through independent film and media.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. Merlin Bell has faced numerous challenges along the way. He has experienced financial instability, periods of homelessness, and deep depression.
Additionally, Merlin has endured the loss of three brothers, a friend, and his grandmother, as well as witnessing some of his friends experiencing similar losses. Despite these hardships, Merlin persevered through his passion for creative outlets and faith.
