Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikayla Vermeer.
Hi Mikayla, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved the beauty industry, but growing up I was very academic. After my junior year of high school, I experienced some major health challenges that completely changed my perspective on life. It made me realize that life is too short not to pursue something you’re genuinely passionate about.
I toured a few cosmetology schools and immediately knew I had found where I belonged. During my senior year of high school, I worked at Ulta, where I sold makeup, worked the register, and took every opportunity I could to do people’s makeup and hair. It only confirmed that this was what I wanted to do.
I knew almost immediately that I wanted to specialize in hair extensions, so I completed a nine-month apprenticeship where I trained under an experienced stylist while slowly building my own clientele.
I spent seven years at that salon. Eventually, I realized I had outgrown the environment and was ready for something new. I went independent for a period of time, but I quickly learned that I thrive in a collaborative salon atmosphere. That journey led me to Petal Hair Lounge, where I work today, and it’s truly been the perfect fit.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many people in this industry, I eventually realized how physically demanding doing hair can be. After several years behind the chair, I started feeling the effects on my body and knew I needed to make changes if I wanted this to be a long-term career.
Now I prioritize yoga, stretching, strength training, rest, and taking care of my overall health so I can continue doing what I love.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in luxury hair extensions, specifically K-tip and weft extensions. I chose these methods because they can create incredibly natural, seamless results while prioritizing the health of my clients’ natural hair.
What sets me apart is that healthy hair always comes first. Every maintenance appointment includes removing the extensions, assessing the scalp and natural hair, washing and trimming their own hair, and custom coloring, washing, and blow-drying the extensions separately before reinstalling them. It’s a very detailed process, but I believe it’s what allows my clients to wear extensions long-term without compromising the health of their natural hair.
What matters most to you?
Making people feel like the best version of themselves is what matters most to me. Hair is so much more than just hair. I want every client to feel comfortable being themselves in my chair and to leave feeling more confident than when they walked in.
I’m also passionate about continuing my education. The beauty industry is constantly evolving, and I believe there’s always something new to learn. Staying curious and continuing to grow allows me to provide the best experience possible for my clients.
