Meet Nakia King

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nakia King.

Hi Nakia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I often joked about starting a beauty supply when my career was challenging. Two years later, I finally took the leap of faith and opened a beauty supply. My overall goal was to build a business in my community as well as leave a legacy for my children and grandchildren. I had no idea where to begin, but I would be up at 2:00 a.m. researching and looking for information. As I begin to research, more doors begin to open. I was discouraged when vendors did not want to open accounts or have extremely high minimums to open the accounts. I kept striving and just thinking of ways to provide services to my customers. I had problems with building out the store and I depleted every dime of my savings. I would not suggest that for others, but I believed in what I was doing. I believed in me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Challenges were opening hair accounts; the distributors either would not respond to my numerous inquiries, or they would give extremely high dollar amounts to open an account. The other challenge was marketing and driving traffic to the store. I did not know how to get the word out without spending more money. I used all of my savings to continue to build inventory, and it seems you can never have enough inventory because each customer wants what they want and it is our job to keep them coming.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Although I am an educator by day, we pride ourselves at Ajourni Beauty Supply on exceptional customer service. This is the area that we do not compromise. We provide every customer with exceptional customer service because they deserve to be valued where they spend their dollars. I am proud to say the growth has come from continuously working to grow our inventory and product knowledge. We are set apart because of the experience we provide for our customers.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I have always been afraid to take risks. Opening the beauty supply was a risk that if you had asked me five years before, I would have said no. There is no way I would have used my savings to invest in myself. Moving forward and experiencing this accomplishment, I have opened myself up to taking more risks for myself. You are your most important investment.

Now that I have learned to walk in my POWER and take risks, I am now working with single mothers and women to open their own beauty supplies and/or businesses as well.  I have started my company Ajourni Vision & Consulting Services to work with mothers who want more for  themselves and their children.  It’s possible! I am a walking testimony!
