Meet Stephen Asadorian of Asadorian Rug Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Asadorian.

Stephen Asadorian

Hi Stephen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a kid, I remember going to work with my dad. My brothers and I would run around the warehouse; as soon as we were old enough, we would help flip through rug stacks and clean rugs. I always found everything about rugs interesting. After a few years of working various jobs for other companies/people, I was ready to be my boss. I knew it was time to open my store, but we needed a new location. So here we are now in the Westport area of Maryland Heights.

Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It hasn’t been challenging. We had a few bumps getting up and going, and COVID hit. Luckily, during COVID, we could do no-contact pick-ups, keeping that part of the business going. We are finally at a place where we have a steady business and can start thinking about what’s next.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Asadorian Rug Company is a curated collection of high-quality, ethically sourced, authentic oriental rugs. Our story began several generations ago while searching for a way to share our passion for delicate rugs and their preservation with the Greater St. Louis Area. My great-grandfather and his brother started the Asadorian Rug Company together and passed it down to their children, and my dad and I now run my store; it truly is a family affair. We are in a new location now ( for 4 years ) but are still the same company with the same values. Any day, you can find one or both of my children (11 & 13) sitting at the desk, working on social media, or helping us show rugs. My wife, Abby, does much of the behind-the-scenes work.

As a child, I remember my brothers and I going to work with my dad. Those are some of my best memories. It instilled a great work ethic in all of us. All three of us own our small businesses. I want that for my kids. I want our customers to know who they support when they choose us.

We have always had a passion for sourcing beautiful oriental rugs. We carry everything from antique collector pieces to new modern designs and everything in between. We will do our best to find it if we need to get exactly what you are looking for. We believe that rugs are art. They are all unique. The work that goes into making every rug is amazing. Each handmade rug has a story. Some are shorter than others, but still, it’s amazing. We want to share those stories and that history with our customers. Recently, we realized something needed to be added. We needed to bring in a lower price point that would appeal to a different customer, so we partnered with Loloi and now can offer those to customers.

Along with selling rugs, we offer cleaning, repair, basic rug maintenance, and appraisals. We have a tried and true method for cleaning and caring for rugs and a couple of master weavers who do amazing work for us. These rugs can last several lifetimes if cared for properly. They are an investment and can be handed down through generations as our business has been.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I was born and raised in St. Louis. I love the history the city has. The architecture is fantastic. We have some lovely homes here. Things I hate: Driving Highway 70 into downtown. lol
