Meet Takiyah Prowell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Takiyah Prowell.

Hi Takiyah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Reading is one of my most favorite hobbies. I’ve loved reading since I was about 4-years-old. I wanted to write a book after seeing my mom co-write a book. I bugged her over and over until she knew I was serious about writing a book. When I was 7-years-old, I began to write the story of “Re-Re The Reader”. When I finished writing the story, I gave it to my mom to review. She really liked the story and that’s when we worked our way through the publishing process. “Re-Re The Reader” later became a bestselling title in three categories.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t always been easy. Sometimes my hand would hurt because I would write so much and then go back and change what I wrote. I learned that it takes a while for illustrations to be done. Publishing can be hard when you’re doing it yourself. But everything was worth it in the end. My book turned out great!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the 9-year-old author of the children’s picture book, “Re-Re The Reader”. This story is about a young girl in St. Louis, Missouri who gains superpowers through reading. This story is important to me because it encourages other kids to read. My goal is to have other children love reading as much as I do. Many people have said that they love “Re-Re The Reader” and this motivates me to write more stories. I am most proud when I see other kids reading and enjoying my book. I have been able to use some of the money I get from book sales to help other children build their libraries at home. I have partnered with organizations in St. Louis, West Tennessee, and Detroit to help donate hundreds of books to children. In the summer of 2021, I won a community award by The Mission Attempt STL for my mission to help other children receive books to have at home.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My mom is my biggest cheerleader. I love her so much. She’s the reason why “Re-Re The Reader” is published. She makes sure that I read every day and work on my writing skills. Selling books is a business and I was inspired to start a business by my brother Joshua. He is the owner of “JZ’s Sweets”. I help him sell cake pops, candy, and other treats. My Pa-Pa, Granny, Uncle Robert, Uncle Jerry, and my school principal Mr. Reaves are some of my biggest supporters and I really appreciate them. Mrs. Arriel Biggs and all of my friends from Young Biz Kidz have really helped me learn about the importance of financial literacy and that entrepreneurship is possible for a kid like me. I am always grateful to everyone who has purchased a copy of my book. I call them my “Super Readers”.

I purchased the book and was so amazed at the penmanship of this child. Great things are happening and will continue to happen because she has a solid foundation of love and leadership. The book was really enjoyable to me a senior that I ordered another to give away. Right on Takiyah.
