Meet Tim Johnson of Villa Ridge, MO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Johnson

Hi Tim, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Music has always been a huge part of my life. I come from a musical family so I started playing and singing very young. I wrote my first song at 13. I was in and out of several bands and eventually started my own band Walk The Earth. We recorded two albums (the Flood of Creation and Mirror). At the time we were recording at Pogo Studio with Mark Rubel. We won the battle of the bands at Pops and played everywhere we could until we separated around 2007. I decided to start releasing songs under my name. In 2017 me and the drummer from Walk the Earth, Jeremiah Pellin, recorded “Gone” with Grammy award winning producer Sylvia Massy. I went to Nashville and recorded a few songs with Colt Capperune. In 2019 I won a radio contract and released 3 songs to country radio. My song “Beachbound” made it to #64 on the Music Row chart. In 2020 and 2021 I won Songwriter Of The Year at The Josie Music Awards. At the same time E.J. Turner, Jeremiah and I were back in the studio again. We recorded several tracks with William Reeves. Recently my song “She Does” was used in the soap opera The Young and the Restless. I’m currently recording my newest song “Goodbye” with Jeremiah and E.J. at Red Pill Studio. Jacob Detering is the engineer there. This song is set to release early 2025. I’ve released 18 songs as Tim Johnson and both Walk the Earth albums on ITunes, Spotify, Pandora, YouTube, Amazon Music, Apple Music etc. I love to explore writing in different genres and I truly believe that I have a song for everyone.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve had a full time job outside of music since I was twenty. I’m also a Dad of two boys so they keep me pretty busy. I practice, write, record and play shows when time and energy allows. Honestly, it wasn’t a smooth road but it could’ve been worse. I feel very blessed to have accomplished what I have so far. Every day is another chance to do my best work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I think what sets me apart from a lot of other musicians is my ability to write songs. I know a lot of amazing musicians that can sing and play much better than me but not many of them write their own songs. That’s my favorite part though. I love telling a story through music and when one of my songs touches someone else I know I did my job. That’s when I feel like I’m walking in my destiny. Sometimes it takes months. Other times it takes ten minutes. The entire time I’m doing what I love.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
There has always been a great underground metal scene and awesome venues here in St. Louis. That metal/punk rock style of original music has always had a huge following here. It was hard for me to break through with my style because it’s not real heavy but I feel a change happening. Music lovers in the area are wanting more of a variety these days. That’s exciting for me. I’m looking forward to the future of music around here.
