Rising Stars: Meet Bebe Taylor of Tulsa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bebe Taylor

Hi Bebe, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As long as I can remember I’ve always been a lover of music. I remember the stories of my mom telling me I could whistle as a baby, and now today I have my own recording studio. There have been so many obstacles that have gotten in my way to try and stop me from my purpose but not even stage 4 renal failure and being on dialysis could keep me away from my dreams. I play a lot of instruments including trumpet, guitar, piano, bass, djembe, and of the computer. Once I learned to make music using software, it changed how I saw the world and all the possibilities of where music could take me. I’ve played trumpet for the high stepping T connection band at BTW, then I traveled playing djembe in an African troupe called a Taste of Africa, then to playing bass and singing backgrounds for an Indie band, then it was time to take my own gifts to the center stage. Now I’ve been in plays, musicians, commercials, short films, and the sky is the limit.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My sicknesses and illnesses have slowly kept me from doing all the things I’ve wanted to do. A short list from the top of my head include diabetes type 1, hypertension, stage 4 renal failure. Most of childhood was spent trying to afford my meds and the rest of my adult life was spent in the hospital until I had my recent kidney transplant in July 2023. Now I have a new life and more time to pursue music

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to think that I am a giver, a helper, a provider among a list of other things that I can do. I love to give back to my community. I love working with kids and teaching them in whatever way they need. I was a teacher for a very long time and used to incorporate music into my lessons. The students and I would write songs together and then create dances to help the remember the song as well. Most of the songs were educational but some were also emotional and confidence building.

How do you define success?
Success defined to me is being happy and being recognized by yours peers. For even one person to say keep doing what you’re doing is enough for me.
