Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Winter.
Hi Emma, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Photography has been with me since childhood, thanks to my grandfather who was never without a camera or camcorder, and my grandmother, a painter who saw beauty everywhere. I studied art and photography throughout high school and early college, but it wasn’t until my first “big girl job” working in communications at a nonprofit that I rediscovered photography’s practical and powerful potential. I started my creative journey with a practical mindset, pursuing a degree in graphic design from Maryville University. I’ve always believed in the power of visual storytelling to better connect people.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My jouney has been far from perfect. I knew I wanted a creative profession, but finding somthing that satisfied the need for stability and consistancy as well as the drive and passion of my loved hobby was challenging. Graphic design became my focus but along the way I started getting burnt out, not finding inspiration or an outlet for my creativity outside of work. I started practicing photography outside of my daily job to grow my skills and experience for work but discovered that the simplicity of the creativity brought me more joy and excitement. While persuing freelance photography after being a designer my whole career, I struggled to gain confidence in my abilities and felt like I was behind other photographers, friends or colleagues who were in the same position. I learned to lean into my strengths and give myself grace. Focusing on what made me feel joy, what I was good at and not just what was “popular”. I still struggle with imposter syndrome and confidance when it comes to finding new clients and putting myself out there. But, I know I have a strong system of family and friends who will cheer me on.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a documentary style photographer. I love all photography and do professional portrait sessions with poses and props but my passion is documenting unposed, authentic life moments. Photography, for me, is about more than just beautiful images… it’s about capturing the feeling behind them. Whether I’m capturing an event, building a brand story, or creating portraits, my goal is always the same: to preserve genuine connection and emotion in every frame. I approach each session with curiosity and care, letting the day unfold naturally while focusing on the details that tell your unique story. As an introvert, I think what sets me apart is that I find meaning in the quiet in-between moments. The ones most people overlook. My love language is quality time, and I bring that same presence into every session. I approach photography as more than a job, but a way of honoring people, preserving emotion, and paying attention.
How do you think about happiness?
Like stated before, my love language is quality time. As long as I am with the people I love, I find so much joy in even the simplest moments. One of my greatest inspirations is nature. I love being in the outdoors as I find it the most raw and purest form of creation/creativity. How the world just naturally has so much beauty is just so awesome!
