Today we’d like to introduce you to Eugenio Cerrosi
Hi Eugenio, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Brazil to Italian parents. My dad was an architect, and my mother was a professional accordion player. I was involved in singing, ballet, classical music, and visual art from the very beginning. I started painting seriously when I was about 16 years old. I moved to the United States in July of 2000 and attended NYU and The Juilliard School. Even though my studies were more related to music, I continued my interest in painting. During COVID I I began to focus on my painting much more.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Although I had been painting for many years before COVID, during the pandemic, I began devoting considerably more time to painting. At that time, few people associated my name with visual art–with painting. It took time and patience to build a following, but gradually, collectors of my work began to emerge, and I developed a solid following on social media and at the art fairs.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I teach music and piano at a public high school, and I am a classical pianist. I derive a great deal of satisfaction from teaching my students. My career as an abstract painter also gives me a great deal of personal pleasure.
How do you think about happiness?
I love painting because it permits a much more creative personal expression. Classical music is very structured, and it is the job of the classical pianist to play the music exactly as the composer intended. In other words, there is not a lot of room for creativity on the part of the musician. Abstract painting, on the other hand, is all about freedom of expression–there are no rules and no guardrails. Creativity can simply flow. Moreover, I love talking with people about my art. That is why I like doing art fairs. Those venues allow me to interact with people who find my art interesting. Over time, not only have I developed a following of collectors who return to these fairs year after year, but it also allows my work to be seen by many folks who are viewing it for the first time. Abstract painting encourages a free-wheeling discussion and interruption of what I have created, and it makes me happy to discover what others see in my work.
