Rising Stars: Meet Kayliah Love of Chicago, IL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayliah Love.

Kayliah Motes

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story started when I was a little girl. My mom had me at a very young age so I would be with her all the time as she followed her dreams as an independent musical artist. From studio session to studio session I would be there listening to her recite her vocals over and over. While this probably wasn’t ideal for her, it made a huge impact on how I value music today. Seeing my mother’s work ethic and consistent drive to go after what she wanted even after having a child also inspires the work ethic I have today. I would like to say that the drive to go after my dreams was a straight lined journey, but being with my mom so much also showed me seeing the struggles of the music industry. That hard work doesn’t guarantee success. I told myself I didn’t want to be in an industry that doesn’t pour into me as much as I pour into it. One of my first experiences being on the other side of the booth though changed that entire perspective for me. I finally understood why my mom loved her craft so much. The ability to express myself and sing to my heart’s content, the beauty behind writing and rewriting to my own perfection , playing with different melodies and stacking harmonies. I fell in love with the creation of music and realized that doing what I love and the joy I feel while doing the things I love outweighs society’s impossible and forever changing definition of success. Now I am currently a D1 student athlete at Depaul University in Chicago IL, I released my first single in April 2024 titled I Need Your Love and recently released my second single titled GARDEN in February 2025. Balancing the rigorous and demanding schedule of a student athlete as well as trying to follow my dreams as an independent musical artist has its challenges but I am just happy I am able to express myself through my music. Exercise my creative ability. My passion pushes me to continue to perfect my craft, while my drive to reach my full potential helps me thrive in my independent artistry journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
– Being a student athlete takes up so much of my time but it is a commitment I made as an athlete and blessing that is getting me through college. Ive had to learn to not resent my sport due to possible musical opportunities missed because of it or the lack of time I get to write sing or record. I big channel for me right now is leaning to be patient and appropriate what I have access to now. – I would also say a challenge would be my obsession with perfection. While I do think in many ways it makes me work harder and allows me to only put my best put forward. I also think it limits my creative ability to express myself fully out of fear. As an artist I am learning that it is possible to rework something too much.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a singer and songwriter. I would say that I started out with covering song and as my passion grew I because my own artist and create my own work. I am most proud of the content I create, whether that is the song I made, being the creative director and editor of my photo and video shoots. The designer of my outfits that I wear to shows and just the visionary behind who Kayliah Love is. That is what I am most proud and what sets me apart is, being a visionary and executing it. Being apart of almost every step of the creative process as an independent artist.

What’s next?
My plans for the future is to continue releasing authentic and genuine music that touches people in ways I cant imagine. I would love to take music as far as becoming mainstream and getting signed to a record label. I am looking forward to being able to put more time and energy into what makes me Kayliah Love.

I am planning for being apart of the marketing, musical and or creative brains behind any form of black art. Weather that be film, Photography, music, fashion, sports, dance, I want to be able to express or help others express their vision and voice through art.
