Rising Stars: Meet Khalia Moore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Khalia Moore.

Hi Khalia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I fell in love with cooking at a young age. My dad was a chef and opened Longhorn’s throughout the US. So I was always around cooking and in the restaurants with him. I watched both my mom and dad cook all the time, so I was learning how to cook by just simply watching. Then when I was about 13-14, I really got interested in being in the kitchen. I wanted to start doing what my dad loved to do.

My dad and I shared a dream of one day opening our own food truck. Unfortunately, my dad passed away on 12.15.15. Now our food truck dream is left all up to me, and I told myself that I was going to make sure that our dream comes true. My dad was my best friend, so when I lost him, I wanted to throw the towel in. I was 15 when he passed. I am 21 now. I still surprise myself on how far I’ve come because at one point, I thought progress was impossible. But I never gave up. Just this past summer, 2020, I was trying to come up with a business name. I finally wrote some options down, but KhaliasKravings was just perfect. After I finally chose a name for my food services, I had what I needed to finally start my business. I had to overcome a lot of self-doubts, but I’m happy I did!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been too bad, honestly. The few bumps in the road weren’t impossible to overcome. What I can say is a struggle for me is succeeding with my food business and not having my dad here with me. He sparked that flame in my heart for cooking, and I just wish he was here to see it. Everything I do is for my dad, mom, and little sister. I just wanna make my family proud.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a preschool teacher M-F and a private chef/caterer on the weekends. I provide services like fine dinning experiences, catering baby showers, birthday parties, etc. I sell food plates sometimes as well. Pop-up shops has definitely become a thing for my business as well. I actually really love the pop-up shops, a great chance to really network.

Can you talk about how you think about risk?
I am very big on risk-taking! I feel as though that is what life is all about. If you don’t take risks, you’ll always be stuck wondering and thinking, “what if.” You have to take risks to challenge yourself and to really see how much you want something. Im a “Yolo” type of person! I love to take risks, try new things, and just explore.
