Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyah Donald .
Hi Kyah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, thanks for this amazing opportunity to share my story with you. My name is Kyah (Byebyeky on all my personal social media platforms). I am a content creator based out of STL where I create fashion, lifestyle, and locs content for myself, but in hopes of inspiring others. My platform has been a key component in my life to express my personal style and build confidence through my creativity. To share a little about myself, as a kid I’ve always had a creative sense of fashion. Many of my inspirations come from my big sister & mom; they set the tone very early for me. Growing up, we moved from state to state a lot and I was always the “new kid” at every school. I didn’t have a “home” until my family came to STL in 2005. We lived in many different parts of STL, but Ucity became home for me in my middle school years.
Moving around caused much of our stuff to get left behind or sold in U-Haul storage containers, but I’ve always loved clothes and shoes. At a young age, I started to get creative with my fashion. I always got my sister’s most fly hand-me-down clothes and shoes. We used to go to thrift stores for a lot of our pieces. We would DIY distressed denim, bleach clothes & even tailor the items to fit us better. Occasionally we would get new stuff from family members, and thank God I didn’t grow fast, so I’ve always kept my stuff for years.
Today I have my own YouTube channel & have been successful on many social media platforms, specifically Instagram. I post fashion-related content to inspire other people to find their style! Creating content has been a huge outlet for me. I’ve always wanted my own YouTube channel since I was in middle school. In March of 2021, I started my YouTube journey, and it’s been a bumpy ride, but the endless support from my followers and family keeps me going. Plus, it’s always been my dream since I was a kid.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As I mentioned, moving to different states and not having much money for new items was a little challenging. I loved fashion so much that I always wanted new things, but I knew my mom couldn’t afford them. So shopping at thrift stores made things better because I could style the items to my liking for very little money. It was a struggle being so petite a lot of stuff wouldn’t fit, so oversized clothes became my signature style.
I’ve grown to learn that challenges will always come. I even face them as a content creator. Especially with YouTuber! Technology can be your friend and enemy sometimes. The smallest things that create roadblocks. From focusing on school, to not having storage space on your device, or even not having the right equipment to create your ideas can be frustrating. For me those challenges have slowed me down and discouraged me from creating. Nonetheless, we keep going.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an advocate for personal style! I create fashion-related content on Instagram, YouTube & TikTok!! I’ve been able to build all of my platforms from the ground up in hopes of inspiring other people. Some of my favorite work includes my YouTube editing skills. I create my thumbnails, intros/outro, and edit all my videos from beginning to end. All while using my iPhone!! My Instagram has been most successful in the past year. Many of my best-performing pictures I’ve taken by myself with a tripod and clicker. I enjoy the process that goes into it, but nothing beats the love that my people show me <3 I connect and build relationships with everyone who follows my account. I know many of them in real life, which is genuine.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Many people who follow my accounts may not know that most of my outfits are thrifted or affordable! People always swipe up asking where I get items from, and most of the time, I get them from a thrift store.
*Yes, I share where I get stuff. I’m not a gatekeeper*
But thrifting most of my items is like having a 1 of 1. No one else can buy what I have on. That makes it unique to me. Another thing that many people who watch my YouTube videos might not know is that I record & edit on my iPhone. People always reach out to me asking what type of camera I use. The quality of my videos is very high for everything on my iPhone. And I appreciate it when people notice the quality because a lot of work went into it behind the scenes.
