Today we’d like to introduce you to Lanor Payne.
Hi Lanor, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My path into education was shaped by a deep connection to children, families, and community. Early in my career, working closely with students helped me see how much schools matter beyond academics. I saw firsthand how learning, safety, trust, and care intersect-especially for young children-and that understanding stayed with me.
I didn’t enter leadership because I wanted a title. I stepped into it because I saw gaps that needed to be filled and systems that needed to work better for kids and the adults who serve them. Becoming a principal pushed me to grow quickly leading through uncertainty, supporting educators through challenges, and making decisions that balanced expectations with what was developmentally right for children.
Along the way, I learned that leadership is deeply human work. It’s about listening, showing up consistently, and being willing to make hard calls when they are in the best interest of students. Every role I’ve held has reinforced my belief that education is about developing the whole child and honoring the communities we serve.
Today, I remain grounded in that purpose. My story is still unfolding, but at every stage, my “why” has stayed the same: to create learning environments where children are seen, supported, and given the opportunity to thrive.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. There were seasons when the weight of responsibility felt heavy, and the expectations-both spoken and unspoken-were overwhelming. Leading while caring deeply can be exhausting, especially when you are constantly navigating competing demands, limited resources, and the emotional needs of others.
There were moments of doubt, burnout, and isolation-times when I questioned whether I was doing enough or if my voice truly mattered within larger systems. Making decisions that prioritized students and staff was not always met with agreement, and standing firm in those moments required courage. I also had to learn, sometimes the hard way, how to protect my own well-being while continuing to lead with empathy.
Those struggles forced me to slow down, reflect, and grow. They taught me that resilience is built through honesty, boundaries, and community. While the road has been challenging, it has also been deeply affirming. Every difficult moment strengthened my commitment to lead with integrity and remain grounded in the purpose that brought me to this work in the first place.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I serve as the Director of Early Childhood for the Normandy Schools Collaborative, where my work centers on strengthening early learning systems, improving instructional quality, and ensuring young children receive developmentally appropriate, high-impact instruction. I specialize in building strong academic foundations while honoring the social-emotional and developmental needs of children.
What I am most proud of is the consistent academic growth achieved over the last two years. More than 90% of our preschool students met the Missouri Early Learning Standards, and over 73% of our kindergarten students are reading on or above grade level. These outcomes reflect intentional instruction, data-informed decision-making, and strong collaboration with educators and families.
What sets me apart is my ability to translate vision into practice. I lead with clarity and conviction, using data as a tool-not a label-while protecting what is developmentally right for children. I am known for creating systems where teachers feel supported, expectations are clear, and students thrive. I do not separate academic excellence from humanity; I believe the strongest results come when children are seen, supported, and challenged as whole learners.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Beyond my professional work, I am someone who values faith, family, and community. I believe deeply in living with intention, giving myself grace, and staying connected to the people and moments that ground me. Outside of work, I find joy in reflection, meaningful conversations, and creating space for rest and renewal-things that are often overlooked but essential.
I would encourage readers to remember that growth doesn’t always look loud or linear. Sometimes it looks like choosing peace, honoring boundaries, and trusting the process even when the path isn’t clear. Wherever you are in your journey, give yourself permission to evolve, to pause, and to keep going.
