Rising Stars: Meet Sherrese Hester of St Louis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherrese Hester.

Hi Sherrese , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Ree Ree’s Rollin Chicken is a proud, family-owned small business that has refined its recipes over more than a decade. We are Minority-, Veteran-, and Woman-Owned.

Founder and owner, Sergeant First Class (Ret.) Sherrese Hester, served 23 years in the U.S. Army and retired in 2020. Her decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (ARCOM), Army Good Conduct Medal (AGCM), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (ARCAM), National Defense Service Medal (NDSM), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal (GWOTSM), Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Silver Hourglass, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon (ASR), and the Army Superior Unit Award (ASUA).

Launched at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Ree Ree’s Rollin Chicken began as a weekend plate service from our home, born from a lifelong passion for cooking for family and friends. As word spread, we quickly expanded into catering for birthdays, baby showers, weddings, and corporate events, and grew our presence through pop-up shops and food truck events.

In 2021, we introduced Ree Ree’s Flavored Pickles, which gained strong community support at pop-up markets and in local retail. At peak distribution, our pickles were carried in more than 10 convenience stores.
Today, we remain committed to exceptional flavor, consistent quality, and heartfelt service—values shaped by military discipline and family tradition.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Owning Ree Ree’s Rollin’ Chicken has been both challenging and deeply rewarding. Working in a customer-facing business requires resilience and composure. The operation demands significant sacrifice, including early mornings, late nights, and constant problem-solving.

Not every event has met expectations. Weather disruptions, lower-than-anticipated turnout, and last-minute cancellations—particularly with pop-up shops—have at times led to profit losses. Larger catering engagements have presented their own hurdles, as food for large events is a major expense and some customers are unwilling to meet the necessary price points.

Through these experiences, I’ve learned to lead with confidence, stand behind the quality of our product, and focus on expanding our customer base. Most importantly, the good days consistently outweigh the difficult ones. It is genuinely gratifying to look around an event and see customers enjoying food we’ve poured our time, care, and love into.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Professionalism is the foundation of Ree Ree’s Rollin’ Chicken. My grandmother taught me: “If you’re going to do something, do it right or don’t do it at all.” That principle guides everything we do.

Whether the event is intimate or large-scale, we uphold the same standards:

Consistent punctuality and reliable timelines
Uniformed, well-trained staff
Meticulous preparation and presentation
Attentive, solution-oriented customer service
Our commitment is simple: arrive on time, look the part, and deliver exceptional food and service—every time

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
No. Just wanted to say Thank You for allowing Ree Ree’s Rollin’ Chicken this opportunity.
