Story & Lesson Highlights with Cora Worthington of Metro East

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Cora Worthington. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Cora, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me is very full, from the time I wake up to the time I go to bed! My baby tends to wake me up around 5:30, though she normally goes back to sleep and I’m able to get a quick workout and Bible study in before 6:30. She usually wakes back up around then, and it’s time to get her fed and my husband, Matthew, his breakfast and lunch packed before he leaves for work at 7:00.
After that, my daughter and I go outside to feed our horses and chickens. I’ll usually eat a light breakfast around 8:00, and then we spend some time together playing with each other and our dog Daisy, reading books, and eating another snack before she goes down for her nap at 10:00.
When naptime starts, the art starts! This is the highlight of my day (besides when my daughter laughs or my husband comes home) because I can channel my creativity. It is so relaxing, I don’t know what I would do with my time if I didn’t do art! Usually, I’ll be working on a new design for T-shirts, a drawing for myself, a drawing to sell prints of, or most often, custom drawings for my customers!
I will work as long as baby sleeps, usually between 1-2 hours. When she gets up, it’s time for lunch. I’ll usually prepare her food first and then eat after she gets started. In the afternoon, I spend about an hour or so tidying up messes, cleaning the floors, doing laundry, or some other household maintenance task. I also try to practice music in the afternoon since baby girl likes listening to it, especially mandolin. We also try to go outside and play with Daisy. She will go down for another nap around 3, and then I get to do art usually for about an hour.
After she wakes up, I’ll continue doing some last-minute cleaning before Matthew comes back home, and usually I’ll try to have dinner done by 5:30. We eat together at the table, I will tidy up while my husband goes outside to do some kind of project, whether it be fixing something, building something, or feeding the animals again.
After that, it’s time for our bedtime routine, which consists of a bath, soft music, reading a book, and prayer together. Matthew will come and say goodnight, and then baby sleeps.
After that, I will usually start winding down, enjoying some dessert with Matthew. Sometimes we will watch a movie together or play a game. Usually I’ll work on more art if I am able to! Finally, we will go to bed around 10:00.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Cora Worthington. I am an artist from Southern Illinois. I do a unique kind of art called stippling, in which I create drawings out of thousands (and sometimes millions) of dots! Most of what I enjoy drawing consists of western, country, music, and Christian themes, though I am often commissioned to do quite a few portraits and pets. My drawings usually take an average of 20-30 hours to complete.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Well, I certainly believed I couldn’t just be an artist. I believed that only a select few famous people could be artists, and only people who lived in big cities. I thought the only way I could be creative was by entering an art-related career, such as art therapy or graphic design. These are great fields, but there was one big problem with them: I couldn’t do MY art. God has blessed me with a husband who encouraged me to stay home, pursue art and music, and take care of our baby! I can dedicate more time to my art than I ever could have in a normal career, and I get to spend so much more time with my family. I may never be famous, but I have seen my fair share of success in my work and in my family life!

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could go back and meet 12-year-old Cora, I would tell her, “You do not give yourself enough credit. You are loved; you are a kind, beautiful soul and will grow up to be happier than you ever imagined possible, doing all you ever dreamed of and then some! I promise, everything will be okay. God has a plan for you.”

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
If I had to guess, aside from art and music, they would say my relationship with my husband is incredibly important to me. My daughter certainly goes without saying! They’d also probably say that Jesus matters, hopefully that He matters the most. I try to include God in as much of my life and art as possible.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say that I was a good Christian woman, who was kind to everyone I met and that I was a good wife and mother. I hope they talk about my artwork and how much they enjoyed getting to know me- the artist- while I was still here. I especially hope that my art is enjoyed long after I am gone.
