Story & Lesson Highlights with Johnny Pelhank of Southwest City

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Johnny Pelhank. Check out our conversation below.

Johnny, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Music. There is so much good music coming out these days in every genre. From hip-hop to indie music there is always something to bring me joy throughout the day. If I’m doing chores, working out, or driving, I”m always able to find a tune to keep me going.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a designer and photographer that loves print. Whether it’s a mailer or a book, I love to get lost in the pages. I have the most fun designing for print. Setting up grids and laying out the content and knowing exactly how it will be seen is where I find the most joy in design. It feels even better when I get to use my photography within the pages as well. I’m currently working on branding a new taco joint opening in Saint Louis soon with a team of talented creatives helping me bring it to life. We have big plans for this brand and watching it all come together gives me great joy. Shout out to Greg Davis (designer) and Jenna Tanner (writer)!

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I give great thanks to the man who brought my creative side to life, Jon Cournoyer. He took me under his wing as an undergrad and saw the potential I have to be a great designer. I owe all of my skills and eye for design to him.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
One of the first design classes I took at Webster University was filled with amazing talent and on the first project we had I looked at everyones work and thought mine was no match and I should just give up as a designer.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
Ok, this has nothing to do with graphic design, but the design of transportation. It is true that traffic has the right of way when merging onto the highway, but no one remembers the drivers handbook and assumes traffic should give you the right of way. This is the root cause of all traffic. The merger adjusts their speed to find the gap. If no one gives you a gap, you need to wait. It’s in the drivers handbook (Missouri). Look it up.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
On a small river with my wife. There’s nothing better than the cool spring fed waters of Missouri rivers and streams. Fishing, floating, and having fun in the summer months on the river is where I feel most at peace.
