Story & Lesson Highlights with Kia Campbell of St Charles, MO

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kia Campbell. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Kia, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
Ha, I feel like the obvious answer to say is “financial freedom” but in my circumstances I feel like that’s a little too vague. I guess— I’m chasing a life I know exists but I just haven’t lived yet. If I stopped — that would just be me settling and not living to my full potential. I owe it not only to myself, but to the people who supported me when everyone in the room didn’t. I feel being an entrepreneur is being free, you’re running solely off of your own faith. So it’s not something specific we are chasing, but necessarily a lifestyle and feeling. I don’t do what I do for the money, although that is a plus. I do this because I know with hard work and dedication I can get to that end goal of being stressless, elated, calm, obedient and just joyful. As your business grows, you will personally learn the importance of obedience and how it’s a necessary lifestyle you will need to live for you to succeed not only physically but spiritually. I feel I’ve been locked in that place now.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am the owner of Kii Lux Beauty, a licensed esthetician who specializes in lash enhancements, although I offer other esthetic services. I’ve been doing this for the past 5 years now, and it’s become more of a passion than a career. Self-care and wellness genuinely just brings me joy, and seeing others transformations and confidence boost is the highlight of my days. I also offer lash classes for those who are interested in starting a career becoming a lash technician along with selling lashing and lash care products for other lash techs and clients. The end goal is to have my own building, to showcase all my talents and to share them with a wider range of individuals.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
Honestly, I had an army of people who helped shape me into the person I am today. My family didn’t come from riches, I seen them work for everything that they’ve had. I’m an 3rd generation farm kid, so “work” has always been apart of my life whether it was working with the animals, or getting ready to show at the fair. I was conditioned at a young age to work for what I wanted. Although I consider myself the black sheep. I was raised in a family I wasn’t biologically related to, excluding my mother but they still loved and cared for me. My father who stepped up — family guided me to my faith, learning hard work ethic and independency.

We were a big blended family, but the reality of blended wasn’t always great. My earliest memories of “labor work” was seeing my parents hustle. My mom worked multiple jobs, while going to school to higher her education. While my dad was on the road for weeks at a time being a truck driver leaving my mom to raise 3 girls. While he was trying to provide for 5 girls, 2 of the girls being from his previous relationship. That was a moment it clicked for me that “work” is not only providing financially it’s also a sacrifice of time.

Since we weren’t the richest and the most put together family. Working became an escape for me, my first job was at 15, a hostess at our local Mexican restaurant. I haven’t been jobless since and picked up on watching my parents work multiple jobs so that’s what I did most of my teenage years. After graduating, I took it upon myself to learn more about entrepreneurship while in college and learned about having mentors. Those mentors helped me mentally get out of that “poverty mindset” because I wasn’t even aware of the lifestyle that could be lived. It’s very true, if you don’t see it growing up it will never be fluent to you.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering? — I’d prefer humbling experiences. I don’t believe I’ve suffered in this life, although things do get bad it can always be worse. I feel my circumstances has taught me gratitude, patience, reconciliation, reliance and forgiveness. Although, sure you can be taught that at the heights of your success. But I feel it’s at the bottom you appreciate those moments and experiences a little more. It’s the times we feel them the most, because we might not be or think of ourselves as high and mighty. When success hits, it’s not that we careless but we have less to stress. You’re never the same person at the different levels of your career, so we’re always going through changes or life events to teach us things we wouldn’t understand at a different place in our lives.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
I’m not sure if few or more people would agree or disagree — but I know personally this is what shaped me.

Who you let yourself be around matters, they influence you more than you know. What you do with your day to day life matters. Having a relationship with God & having faith matters.

I grew up in a religious family, but never really grasp what it meant to have faith until my adult years. Although, I’m not the biggest advocate when it comes to religion. I believe simply having a relationship with God shifts your whole well-being of life. Nobody really talks about how building a relationship with him, also builds your confidence and how you portray yourself. You can call it manifestation, prayer or whatever but being grounded is so important when being in this industry. There will be days I’m at the beginning of my work week, with only 1 appointment for the WHOLE week. But then I just have to remind myself. He will provide, as long as I’m putting in the work. Then I end up with multiple people booking within the day. His words are reassuring and gives you that boost to believe in yourself, because all things are possible through Christ.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I’m gone I hope people remember me not only from my talents and character but the imprint I left on them. Being a service provider you learn a lot about your clients from their experiences and stories. I always try to be their escape or guidance.

So — I just hope people tell a happy story about me when I’m gone. I want to be that light for others, when they might be in a dark place. Someone who took pride not only in their work ethic and clients, but also as a daughter, aunt, sister, granddaughter, niece and one day mother. Nobody’s perfect, but my intentions will always be genuine and pure it’s just in me.
