Story & Lesson Highlights with Kim Adams

Kim Adams shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Kim, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
K-Pop! I recently found the K-pop community and music about a year ago, and have been hooked since. My favorite group is Stray Kids. I have met so many nice fans, and have made new friends as well!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! My name is Kim, and I’m a 20-year-old crochet artist and small business owner. I was homeschooled and graduated high school in 2023. Since then, I’ve been dedicated to growing my handmade crochet business. I specialize in designing and creating plushies and original crochet patterns, with a focus on building a supportive, creative crochet community.

What makes my brand special is the care I put into every piece — each item is handmade with attention to quality, creativity, and heart. Right now, I’m excited to be working on a new design: my Crochet Cross With Heart pattern, which I’ll be sharing soon on Instagram with a tester call. I love combining faith, creativity, and connection through my work, and I’m so thankful for the support from my amazing community!

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I was a classic people-pleaser. I constantly sought approval and positive feedback from others, and if someone criticized something I enjoyed, whether it was a TV show I liked or something I created, I would often stop pursuing it altogether.

But as I’ve grown, I’ve realized that you can’t live your life trying to meet everyone else’s expectations. True happiness comes from following your own heart, and most importantly, following the path God has for you. My faith has helped me see that my worth doesn’t come from others’ opinions, but from who I am in Christ.

Not everyone will approve of or understand what I do, and that’s okay. I’ve learned to stand by my interests, passions, and goals, especially when they align with the purpose and peace God brings to my life.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear that’s held me back the most has definitely been a mix of perfectionism and people-pleasing. While I’ve made a lot of progress in overcoming my fear of what others think of me, perfectionism is something I still struggle with.

It shows up in small but impactful way, like hesitating to post on social media because I feel like everything has to be just right. I’m learning to remind myself that progress is more important than perfection, and that sharing my work, even if it’s not flawless, is still valuable and meaningful. It’s a process, but I’m growing through it.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies the crochet industry, especially online, tells itself that everything has to be a competition. There can be this unspoken pressure to constantly one-up each other with the next big pattern or the most “aesthetic” feed.

But the truth is, community matters so much more. Connecting with other makers, encouraging one another, and building friendships with people who share your passion is what really makes this craft special. There’s room for everyone, and collaboration will always take us further than comparison.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
I almost always do a little happy dance when I get an order. It’s such a special feeling knowing that someone saw something I made and loved it enough to buy it. Those moments fill me with so much joy and remind me why I started this journey in the first place.

It’s not just about the sale, it’s about the connection, the encouragement, and the fact that something I created with my hands brought happiness to someone else. That’s the kind of excitement that keeps me going.
