We recently had the chance to connect with Micah Turnbough and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Micah, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think one thing that’s often misunderstood about our business is just how much happens behind the scenes. There’s so much that customers never see, but without those efforts, the shop wouldn’t thrive. Since we make all of our ice cream in-house, every flavor takes time, testing, and creativity. Before a flavor ever makes it to the counter, there have been plenty of conversations, trials, and adjustments to make sure it’s exactly right. From the outside, it might feel like everything just appears effortlessly, but there’s a lot of heart, energy, and late-night brainstorming behind every scoop. Just because you don’t see the work happening doesn’t mean it isn’t, and that’s part of what makes it so rewarding.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Micah Turnbough from Singers Ice Cream in Wildwood, Missouri. We own a family-run, karaoke lounge-style ice cream shop where you can enjoy homemade flavors you won’t find anywhere else while singing your heart out. We’re as small, family-owned, and operated as you could ever be! I run the shop with my wife and our two sweet, beautiful girls. Every scoop, every flavor, and every song is a part of the joy we hope to share with our community.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
The people who taught me the most about work were my parents. We opened the shop together and built it from the ground up, and along the way, we faced so many challenges. We all had to make sacrifices, missing family events, late nights, and giving up things we loved, to make sure the shop could keep going. Going through it together taught me so much about perseverance, teamwork, and the joy of creating something with people you love.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self to invest as early as possible and be willing to try all the silly ideas you have in your head. Don’t worry about what you “think” others will “think” because they’re not even “thinking” about it at all. Just be who you want to be and open the business, record the videos, or start the channel.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
I hope we all wrestle with this question on some level, and my answer would be, I genuinely think so. Of course, we all have our moments of stress, or we’re put in situations where our reactions may differ from what we’d like, but in the end, we are responsible for being authentic and honest when interacting with people. I try to treat people with love and respect because that is what I would expect from people. We tell our staff that people come before anything else. I do my best to set that example for our employees, and I hope our community feels appreciated and loved by all of us at Singers.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
Our girls are at the shop with us quite often, and I know it can be hard for them to stay for hours at a time. I hope we’re instilling a strong work ethic while also creating memories they’ll look back on fondly, not with dread. When customers come in with children, our girls immediately see new friends to play with. Watching families come together over ice cream and singing gives me an incredible sense of peace. In a world that can feel full of hate and division, it’s comforting to see people connect with love. It also warms our hearts to see our community not only enjoy our ice cream but also embrace our family as part of it, which means so much more than anything else.
