Story & Lesson Highlights with Mike Weller of Alton, IL

We recently had the chance to connect with Mike Weller and have shared our conversation below.

Mike, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day are my favorite because they are the most consistent and set the tone for the rest of my day.
I wake up and instantly tell the girl of my dreams that I love her. I hold her until the last second that we can. After a shower is on to, the oh so important, dog walk. Not only is the pup getting his exercise, it’s my time to be grateful and to pray for continued strength for my self and loved ones. After a mile with God and the puppers I like to do something extra around the house, it might be cleaning the yard, picking up sticks, or just making the bed extra pretty for the evening relaxing.
After all that it’s time to attack the day with intention!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Mike Weller, I have been in and out of the cigar industry for around 20 years. I started AP Cigar Company in 2016 in Rosewood Heights, IL. In 2022 I moved the business to its current location in downtown Alton, IL. I was raised in Alton, it’s a small town with big dreams so I relate to it deeply. I feel like the town and I have gone through the same growing pains and I’m excited to see where both the town and my business goes in the future.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mom, Vicky. No matter how bad I wanted or tried to be she would always ask me “where would you be if you used your skills for good instead of being mischievous”. I couldn’t see a skill set, I just ran on common sense and opportunities no matter how risky, it wasn’t until later in life did I begin to see myself with a productive skill set and applied it to jobs and eventually my own businesses.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Once a year, once a month, hell, once a day 😂 Seriously, every single time I put myself in a situation that’s harder than than I expected I just try to learn not to do it again and trust the process that it’s going to be a go if I just keep working it.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
I think it really is. I do sell products, but these products are intended to elevate customers experience. And in private I want everyone around me to live their best elevated lives.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think that people see me as working so hard and doing so much for material things. We all enjoy our 🏆 for our hard work, but the real legacy is to show how to trust yourself, take chances, learn from losses, and keep grinding. I lead by example for the ones that start from nothing and have nothing but integrity.
