Tahira Brooks on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Tahira Brooks and have shared our conversation below.

Tahira, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of work, I love spending quality time with my children and niece. We like going to the movies, discovering different waterparks and malls.

In addition to family time, I find excitement in collaborating and brainstorming with fellow creatives and entrepreneurs. There’s something inspiring about sharing ideas and opportunities.

I also have a love for dancing. Dancing is not just a hobby for me; it’s a form of release and joy.

I love challenging people to think independently and to continuously strive for improvement. Helping others unlock and realize their untapped potential is what brings me the greatest joy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Tahira Brooks—an artist, photographer, and content creator. My creative journey began at the age of five, when my mom would enter me in coloring contests that I often would slaughter, lol. As my talent grew, my art teachers noticed and started entering me into art competitions as well.

I got my start in freelance photography a few years ago, during the pandemic—born from a mix of tragedy, boredom, and creative drive. My first photography tool was simply my cell phone, and I learned early on to focus on capturing genuine moments and specific poses.

What sets me apart is my collaborative approach; I love working with a team to make every shoot more efficient and enjoyable, ensuring we never miss a shot. My editing style is also distinctive: I favor a retro look and never use blanket edits—each photo is given its own unique feel. I also utilize photo collages.

When it comes to content creation, my specialty lies in producing behind-the-scenes footage for events and photo shoots. I’m also currently offering a new service: AI tribute videos for those who have lost a loved one. In addition, I continue to offer my annual “Melanin in March” sessions, celebrating diversity.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Many people noticed my potential long before I recognized it in myself. My dad, mom, older sister, and husband consistently urged me to pursue art, especially during times when I felt stuck. Whenever they sensed my unhappiness, one of them would say, “Why aren’t you creating some art, you need to be doing some art”.

My husband was actually my first muse in photography. We often had disagreements about direction, and I did quit numerous times. My older sister from Atlanta was always there to encourage me and promote my artwork as well. Three of these people are no longer here.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I wouldn’t characterize it as suffering; instead, I view it as a series of valuable lessons that struggle has imparted to me. Each challenge I’ve encountered has played a crucial role in shaping my character. Teaching me the importance of adaptability. It has instilled in me the strength to persevere, reminding me that progress often requires hardships.

I hold the belief that success is frequently transient; it ebbs and flows throughout our lives. Therefore, it’s essential to have the ability to navigate these changes accordingly. I’m grateful.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the most prevalent misconceptions in the field of photography and the arts is the belief that pursuing a career as a photographer or artist is both easy and inexpensive. While it may seem that way from the outside, the reality is different. Photography and the creative arts demand a significant investment, not only in terms of finances but also in time and effort.

Additionally, the industry is constantly evolving with advancements in technology, trends, and techniques. This means one must be committed to continuous learning.

Another common myth is the notion that anyone can pick up a camera or a paintbrush and produce remarkable work. While it is true that technical skills can be taught and developed over time, there is an element of artistry that goes beyond mere technique.

While the fundamentals of photography can be taught, the artistry and intuitive understanding of composition, light, and subject matter often cannot. It is a blend of learned skills and natural talent that distinguishes photographers and artists.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
The narrative I aspire for others to share about me is one of inspiration and empowerment. I want people to remember me as someone who motivated them to seize their dreams in the present moment—encouraging them to act boldly and pursue their goals without delay. I envision a story where I instilled the belief that it’s crucial to embrace opportunities as they arise, rather than waiting for the “perfect” time or condition.

Additionally, I hope to instill the message that every individual possesses a unique talent or skill that can be leveraged for personal and financial growth. It isn’t about being the absolute best in a field; rather, it’s the commitment to show up consistently and dedicate effort toward refining those skills that truly matters. I want to inspire others to recognize their potential and take actionable steps, regardless of where they currently stand on their journey. With consistency and perseverance, anyone can transform their talents into something worthwhile.
