Hidden Gems: Local Businesses & Creatives You Should Know

Every day we have a choice. We can support an up and coming podcaster, try a new family-run restaurant, join a boutique gym started by a local fitness champ or we could keep giving away our money to the handful of giants who already control so much of our commerce. Our daily decisions impact the kind world we live in; if we want a world where small businesses are growing and artists and creatives are thriving then we should support them with our time, money and attention. We’re proud to highlight inspiring creatives and entrepreneurs each week in Hidden Gems series. Check out some of our latest local gem features below.

Michelle Ross

My name is Michelle Ross. I’m a multidisciplinary artist in Midwest America. Like many Midwestern kids, I grew up conservative and homeschooled. My brother and I had hours to ourselves to paint, read, draw and run around the neighborhood once we had our lessons done. I created obsessively through my childhood years. I painted murals for baby nurseries and at my high school, caricatures at parties, designed T-shirts. I was in the Post-Dispatch as a feature piece. Columbus College of Art and Design offered me a scholarship equivalent to an entire year of tuition. We couldn’t have afforded a private school without it. I called my mom to tell her the news but had to hand the phone to my brother James to finish because I was crying so hard. Read More>>

Starting your own business with very little knowledge on how to run a business was definitely the hardest thing I have ever done. Being a business owner at 17 while trying to maintain good grades to graduate high school is not as easy as it seems. Once I graduated high school it was time to do the same exact thing in college, this time I had to deal with covid. It was times I wanted to say forget about my business & just focus on school, but then all my hard work would’ve went down the drain. Read More>>

I knew I wanted to be an aesthetician when I was a teenager. My mom and my grandma used to see my now business partner, Jill, and she made me want to get into this industry. After I graduated high school I reached out to her and my other business partner, Andrea. We started in a small little room, just me taking clients, and have now expanded across St. Louis and out of state! Read More>>

One of Dr. Ware’s notable contributions to education is his leadership role as Director of Programming for Dream Builders 4 Equity. Here, he not only directs programming but also authored an innovative Algebra 1 textbook that integrates Black History into mathematical concepts, making education more relevant and empowering for students of color. Dr. Kendall Ware’s creation of the Algebra 1 textbook that integrates Black History is a powerful example of his commitment to making education not just accessible, but also culturally relevant and empowering for all students, particularly those from marginalized communities. The idea for this innovative textbook was born out of his experiences as an educator and his deep understanding of the systemic inequities that often permeate traditional educational materials. I am a St. Louis-based filmmaker, who has been fortunate enough to have transformed my childhood passion for storytelling and illustration into a career in the world of creating. I grew up in rural Missouri with no connection to the entertainment industry or anyone making a living from being creative for that matter. I really owe a lot to my elementary music and art teachers for planting the seeds for the path I ended up taking. Read More>>

I took a pretty standard avenue after high school and went to Central Missouri State University. Honestly, I wish I would have paid more attention, or had more focus in college. as I’m sure is the case with many people, being young and having your first taste of independence proved too alluring. I graduated with good grades, but I think if I would’ve had more fore-thought, I could have gotten more out of my time there. Read More>>

To summarize it… I grew up as a nerd, loving all things Marvel and DC. I also discovered Anime at an early age, specifically Sailor Moon, and I’ve been a fan ever since. While growing up, I never knew that there were ways to express your appreciation of your respective fandoms, nor was I aware that I wasn’t the only one who fit into that category of nerd with a deep appreciation for comics, movies, shows, etc. The admiration stayed with me through my adult years where I eventually discovered crafting/sewing, and eventually there was an overlap of creating my own costumes to express myself and my appreciation for a character. Now, I get to be the characters I loved when I was little. Read More>>

In 2017, we lived in an entirely different world that feels like it was forever ago. At that time, I was a stay-at-home mother living in the middle of nowhere, with the closest store over half an hour away. Although my greatest accomplishment in life will always be my family, that version of me was sitting there, folding laundry and daydreaming about pursuing my own ambitions. That year, we moved back to my hometown with another baby on the way. We spent that first summer in pure bliss, gardening, growing, and adventuring as a family of three for the last time.  Read More>>

I was the 75th hire out of 350 people being hired at once just for the Miller Brewing business, which consolidated all of its sales promotion or below-the-line agencies into one shop—ours. We were doing work for program campaigns from motorsports to Mardi Gras. Every sales window was accounted for. We were young teams working on NBA partnerships, NASCAR, and some of the first secret pop-up concert concepts I’d ever heard of. A huge agency, full of energy, and we all worked non-stop. At this time, around the dot-com boom, budgets were unreal, so concepts were very huge and blue sky. “What if we…” was a big part of conceptual thinking. And we had legs to support it. Read More>>

Sure, I would steal my sister’s shimmery bronzer that made me look like I should be in the movie Twilight, but that was the extent of it. It wasn’t until I was in my junior year of highschool that I discovered makeup was genuinely something I enjoyed doing, and would later pursue. Read More>>

As an instructor and teacher, I worked with children who were tossed to the side as a result of a diagnosis. Later as a corporate trainer, I tried to instill hope in the adult trainees and a sense of accomplishment and support. Read More>>

I started off my career in software – originally as a developer and then got into testing, then test automation. Eventually I started my first company in 2015 and continued the same work but got more into cultural change – the companies that had issues with automating their tests often had cultural issues where people didn’t feel safe to take risk. The company grew until shortly before the pandemic and I eventually had to shut everything down. But I took one of the side services – podcasting – and turned it into its own company called podcastify.me – and it’s been an amazing journey. I’ve grown so much, gotten so much more comfortable with risk, met amazing people and taken part in both building and assisting in building great things. Read More>>

Growing up in New York, beginning band students chose their instrument at the end of 3rd grade, going into 4th. Growing up in a beautiful village, I was surrounded by gardens filled with vibrant flowers, grapevines, fig trees, and olive trees. My mother’s passion for flowers was deeply inspiring—each month, she would add a new bloom to our garden and care for it faithfully, watering it every morning and evening. Our mornings were spent outside, sipping Turkish coffee under the shade of the grapevines, soaking in the fragrance of flowers and the natural beauty around us. We both graduated from Central Visual and Performing Arts, but later I moved to Atlanta to study art at AiA. To test the waters I took a theatre class at Alliance Theater and from there I was hooked. While working in private practice, I started learning about “cash” practices because of insurance frustrations. From where I stood, insurance clinics didn’t seem to make sense for most patients, and they definitely didn’t make sense for a therapist. The patients’ bills were often large, the therapists frantically ran around seeing 4-5 patients at a time teetering on the brink of total burnout, and the clinic ran increasingly thin margins. The only party that came out on top was the insurance company. And the value received at these clinics for what is paid is underwhelming at best. Read More>>

The journey has had so many ups and downs, some roads smoother than others, some bumpy and full of pot holes. Growth often comes through overcoming obstacles and challenges, and I’ve faced my share.
